Carolina Marin claims 5th European Badminton title

Sports Desk, 2 May (EFE).- Carolina Marin on Sunday defeated Line Christophersen 21-13, 21-18 for her fifth European Badminton Championship title.

The Spaniard dominated the first set after the opening points, but she faced more resistance in the second frame from the Dane, but she still emerged victorious after 37 minutes.

With her successful run in Kyiv, the 27-year-old equaled Norwegian legend Peter Gade’s of five European championship win, having claimed the title in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018.

“I feel really happy that I could win my fifth title, you know, it’s not easy to say,” Marin said afterwards.

“I also feel happy because yesterday I was a bit frustrated with how I was playing yesterday, but today I feel a bit happier because we improved my game a lot and I was more focused on my game plan,” she added.

Meanwhile, the men’s singles and doubles finals were canceled after three players involved tested positive for coronavirus prior to the competition.

“On Sunday morning, it has been confirmed that Danish men’s singles player Viktor Axelsen, German doubles player Mark Lamsfuss and one umpire have tested positive for Covid-19,” the European federation said in a statement.

Axelsen was scheduled to play his countryman Anders Antonsen, while Lamsfuss teaming up with Marvin Emil Seidel was set to take on the Russian duo of Vladimir Ivanov and Ivan Sozonov.

“I’m really sorry for Mark and Marvin. The news this morning was a shock. But we know the risks and the current conditions. Of course we have to accept them,” the sports director of the German federation Martin Kranitz said. EFE
