UAE thwarts Houthi ballistic missile during Israeli president’s visit

Sanaa, Jan 31 (EFE).- The United Arab Emirates intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile fired by Yemen’s Houthi rebels early on Monday.

The attack on the Gulf country coincided with the historic visit of Israeli president Isaac Herzog.

The Emirati defense ministry announced in a statement the “destruction of platform for ballistic missile launched from al-Jawf, Yemen towards UAE.”

“There were no casualties resulting from the attack and the fragments of the ballistic missile fell outside of populated areas,” it added, according to the Emirates’ official news agency WAM.

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree claimed responsibility for the attack in a televised speech.

He said the Houthis attacked “important targets in Abu Dhabi with a series of ballistic missiles” and “sensitive targets in Dubai using drones.”

Earlier this month, the Iran-backed Houthi rebels took responsibility for attacks that targeted the airport and oil tankers in Abu Dhabi, leaving three people dead.

These incidents came after Houthi rebels lost control of a province to UAE-backed forces on January 12.

The UAE is part of a Saudi-led Arab military coalition intervening in Yemen in support of the internationally recognized Yemeni government against the Shiite Houthi movement.EFE
