People who ignore orders to self-isolate in England can now face fines of up to £10,000, the UK’s department of health and social care said.

Penalties will range from £1,000 to £10,000 for repeat offenders or employers who order staff who have been told to isolate to come into work, the department said in a statement.

Those unable to work from home or who earn low salaries will be eligible for a £500 support payment, the government said.

“These simple steps can make a huge difference to reduce the spread of the virus but we will not hesitate to put in place further measures if cases continue to rise,” health minister Matt Hancock said.

ROMANIA Residents of the small Romanian town of Deveselu have paid tribute to their mayor by re-electing him days after he died from Covid-19.

Ion Aliman died on 17 September in a Bucharest hospital.

Around 1,020 of 1,700 voters in Deveselu in the south of Romania cast ballots in favor of the late politician, according to news outlet G4Media.
