IS claims responsibility for attacks against Taliban in Afghanistan

Cairo, Sep 19 (EFE).- The Islamic State terror organization on Sunday claimed responsibility for a series of attacks on the weekend in the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad.

The attacks were conducted with explosive devices and killed at least 15 Taliban fighters and wounded 20, the IS announced in a statement published via their news agency, Amaq.

At least three insurgents were killed, while two were wounded in an attack with an explosive device that targeted a Taliban vehicle on Sunday, according to the statement.

Earlier in the day, a Taliban official in the eastern province of Nangarhar told Efe on condition of anonymity that at least four people were killed, including two Taliban fighters, in a bomb attack that targeted one of their vehicles.

This is the second consecutive day of attacks in Afghanistan, after a few weeks of relative calm since the Taliban seized control of Kabul and the United States completed its withdrawal from Afghanistan last month, bringing an end to its 20-year military involvement there.

On Saturday, two members of the Taliban were killed and 16 others were wounded in another bomb attack in Jalalabad.

IS fighters have been operating in Nangarhar province, where Jalalabad is located, since the Afghan branch of the group, which counts the Taliban as its enemy, was officially founded in 2015.

On August 26, a suicide bombing at the Kabul airport, for which the IS took responsibility, killed 13 US soldiers and approximately 170 Afghans trying to enter the airport to catch evacuation flights. EFE
