Nadal tests positive for Covid after Abu Dhabi tournament

(Update 1: Adds ex-king’s negative result)

Madrid, Dec 20 (EFE).- Rafael Nadal on Monday announced he had tested positive for Covid-19 upon his return to Spain from an exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi, where he met with the exiled former Spanish king Juan Carlos I.

“I wanted to announce that on my return home after playing the Abu Dhabi tournament, I have tested positive for Covid in the PCR test that was performed on me when I arrived in Spain,” the tennis star wrote on social media.

The 20-time Grand Slam champions said that all the tests he had undergone every couple of days during his stay in Kuwait and Abu Dhabi, the latest being on Friday, were negative.

“I am now confined to my house and have notified those who have been in contact with me of the result,” he added.

Spanish media reported that Nadal met with Juan Carlos in the United Arab Emirates, where the ex-Spanish monarch, the father of current king Felipe VI, has lived in self-imposed exile following a tax haven scandal.

Spain’s royal household later announced that Juan Carlos had tested negative for Covid-19 following a PCR test.

In Kuwait, Nadal inaugurated an academy and played against David Ferrer, before losing to Andy Murray and Denis Shapovalov at Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala tournament, his first appearance in four months.

“As a result of the situation, I have to have total flexibility with my calendar and I will analyze my options depending on my evolution,” Nadal said. EFE
