Russians will never enter Kyiv, mayor promises

Strasbourg, France, Mar 22 (EFE).- Russians will never enter Kyiv, the city’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, promised local and regional representatives of 46 European countries Tuesday.

“The Russians said that in three weeks they would take Kyiv. As the mayor, I promise them one thing: they will never enter Kyiv,” the former Ukrainian boxer said.

Addressing the plenary session of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the European Council, Klitschko called for political, economic and military support for Ukraine from Europe.

“Nobody in Ukraine feels safe, we need weapons,” he said.

Klitschko said Ukraine has always been a peaceful country and has chosen a “European democratic” path.

“We do not want to live under a dictatorship, in a country where there are no human rights, nor freedom of the press, nor any other freedom for citizens,” Klitschko said.

At least eight people were killed after Russian forces shelled a shopping center in Kyiv, Ukrainian officials said Monday.

Klitschko announced a new 35-hour curfew for the capital city and surrounding areas, from Monday at 8pm until 7am on Wednesday. EFE
