McTominay, Cristiano lead Manchester United over Burnley

Sports Desk, Dec 30 (EFE).- Cristiano Ronaldo had a goal as Manchester United bested Burnley 3-1 Thursday to climb to sixth place in the Premier League.

The Red Devils improved to 31 points, the same as West Ham United, but the Hammers are fifth thanks to better goal difference. Burnley remain in the 18th spot with 11 points, 2 from safety.

United got off to a fast start at Old Trafford, anxious to dispel the doubts raised by their dismal Boxing Day draw with Newcastle.

Ronaldo fired over the cross-bar on a chance in the 6th minute, yet the reprieve for the Clarets proved to be brief, as Scott McTominay scored two minutes later from the edge of the area.

Burnley’s Ben Mee inadvertently extended the lead for the hosts in the 27th minute when his attempt to turn aside a shot from Jadon Sancho redirected the ball into his own net.

Visiting goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey was able to tip a rocket from McTominay in the 32nd minute onto the post, but the ball dropped at the feet of the waiting Ronaldo and the Portuguese great knocked it into the unguarded net.

The Clarets pulled one back in the 38th minute as Aaron Lennon took advantage of a poor touch by defender Eric Bailly and beat keeper David De Gea with a low blast into the corner.

While Hennessey made a trio of good saves in the second half to deny Mason Greenwood, McTominay and Edinson Cavani, De Gea was not tested again. EFE apa/dr
