Sterling fires England to opening win over Croatia

London, Jun 13 (EFE).- Raheem Sterling scored the only goal of the game as England won their opening Euro 2020 match against Croatia at Wembley on Sunday.

Sterling, who has struggled in recent months, was a surprise start ahead of the likes of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Jack Grealish, but he rewarded manager Gareth Southgate’s faith in him with a sweeping finish just before the hour to decide the game.

They deserved the victory, although it was an understandably cagey affair between Group D’s highest ranked teams.

England controlled the game for long periods, and hit the post through Phil Foden’s curling shot in the first half.

They were rarely troubled by a disappointing performance from an experienced and talented Croatia team, orchestrated by Real Madrid lynchpin Luka Modric who struggled to exert his normal influence on proceedings. EFE
