Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio wins big at Annie Awards

Los Angeles, USA, Feb 25 (EFE).- The film “Pinocchio,” by Guillermo del Toro, won big at the 50th edition of the Annie Awards bagging the top honors in five categories, including Best Film and Best Direction.

These awards, known as “the Oscars” of animation, are dedicated to recognizing the best works of the previous year in this field.

The Mexican director’s movie, based on the work of Carlo Collodi, was nominated for nine categories, and walked away with the prize for Best Feature, Best Direction, Best Production Design, Best Character Animation and Best Music.

The ceremony was held in the Royce Hall at the University of California, Los Angeles (USA), after two years of being held virtually due to the pandemic.

Pinocchio’s triumph reiterates its position as the favorite animated film ahead of the Academy Awards on March 12.

Del Toro’s film was released on Netflix, and has already won prizes at the Golden Globes, the BAFTA, the Critics Choice Awards.

However, the faux documentary “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On,” by Dean Fleischer Camp, is emerging as the great competitor to the Mexican film at the coveted Oscars, having received three awards in categories such as Best Indie Film, Best Voice Acting and Best Writing.

While “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” is another top contender at the Academy Awards, having won two Annie’s in the categories of Best storyboarding and Best Editorial.

The animated short film “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse,” which also aspires to an Oscar, won four Annies and James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” won two awards for Best Character Animation and Best Special Effects.

On television, the adult series “Bob’s Burger” beat “The Simpsons” and “Rick and Morty,” while the best children’s series was “Abominable and the Invisible City.” EFE
