According to Pastor Henry Lavender, the perpetrators ransacked the place. Pastor Lavender held back tears as he explained how brazen thieves broke into one of the buildings of his church.

“You can see on the walls on your left, that all of the piping was stripped, clothes everywhere,” Pastor Lavender explained. “All the pipes are gone, the bathrooms destroyed and all the copper or whatever was connected on this wall is gone.”

Pastor Lavender purchased this building, located directly across the street from his church, two years ago, to eventually transition his church into the building. It was also to be used as a children’s church, hair salon, nursing school, and a boutique.

“This door was secured. There was a bar on it. They kicked a hole in a wall and came through here to vandalize whatever was in this area they wanted to take,” Pastor Lavender said.

Memphis Police say the call came in 3:10 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, but Pastor Lavender believes the suspects burglarized the building early Wednesday morning. He also thinks it may have been community members who knew the building was undergoing renovations.

Police say the suspect or suspects cut exterior wires to the alarm system.

“New air conditioning systems were put in not long ago and so they got all the copper off of those air conditioning units. So, our children’s ministry, we can’t have children’s ministry right now because the copper, they took it from that building as well,” said co-pastor Lorre Lavender.

The Lavenders say they’re left with roughly $40,000 in theft and damages. While they are hurt by whoever did this, they are not angry at them.

“We are going to pray for whoever did this, we are going to pray for them,” Lorre Lavender stressed.
