Thousands visit erupting Kilauea volcano in Hawaii

Washington, Oct 1 (EFE).- Since the Kilauea volcano, one of the most active in the world, erupted again Wednesday in Hawaii, United States, thousands of people have approached the area to observe the lava lake and the fountains, according to local media.

The eruption is currently concentrated in the Halemaumau crater, within the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and far from inhabited areas.

The national park has asked all its visitors to behave “responsibly” amid a risk of eruption.

“Weather permitting, you can see the beautiful glow of the 127-acre lava lake (about 0.5 square kilometers),” the park said on its Twitter account.

For its part, the US Geological Survey reported that the level of the lava lake had been rising at an approximate rate of 1 mph since the beginning of the eruption and that the sources of greater height have been between 25 and 30 meters.

Also that “seismic activity is high but stable, with few ongoing earthquakes and volcanic tremors” and that sulfur dioxide emissions remain high and were estimated at about 85,000 daily tons.

Kilauea, which erupted between 1983 and 2018, had its most destructive phase in that last year, destroying some 700 homes in a period of 4 months and forcing the displacement of thousands of people. EFE
