Xiaomi electric car to start mass production in early 2024

Beijing, Mar 6 (EFE).- Chinese technology giant Xiaomi would begin mass production of its first electric cars at the beginning of 2024 after passing all the relevant tests, Lei Jun, the company’s founder, reported Monday during a session of the National Popular Assembly.

Lei said in a plenary meeting of the Beijing delegation that the “progress” in the production of Xiaomi’s car has “exceeded expectations.”

“The vehicle has successfully completed the winter test and it is expected to be launched next year,” said the assembly member, adding that mass production would begin in “the first half of 2024.”

He said he dedicates “half of his time” to the automobile business, in which his company invested more than RMB 3 billion ($ 434 million) in 2022 with a research and development team exceeding 2,300 people.

In March 2021, the technology company announced its entry into the electric vehicle sector with the creation of a subsidiary, headed by Lei himself, which would invest some $ 10 billion over the next 10 years.

Xiaomi already makes some small electric vehicles such as scooters, and has also partnered with Chinese firm Super Soco to jointly produce electric motorcycles. EFE
