Sydney holds massive LGTBI fair as part of WorldPride 2023

Sydney, Australia, Feb 19 (EFE).- Thousands of people gathered in Sydney’s Victoria Park on Sunday for the LGTBI Mardi Gras fair.

Attendees of the celebration, which saw food and drink as well as activism, carried banners that read “Trans rights are human rights” and “Tamil community supports LGTBIQ+”.

Sunday’s picnic was part of the events at WorldPride, the international LGTBI festival which began on Friday and is held periodically in different cities around the world, including Madrid in 2017.

In a statement, the organizers said WorldPride 2023 will consist of 300 events and will have some 500,000 participants, including 78,000 visitors, between February 17 and March 5.

“WorldPride Sydney will be a glittering celebration for the global LGTBQIA+ community and a great opportunity for the city,” said WorldPride Sydney chief executive Kate Wickett.

Highlights include the classic Mardi Gras parade on February 25 and the Pride march across the Sydney Harbour Bridge on March 5.

WorldPride is an event created by InterPride, an international organization that coordinates Pride Day organizers in different cities, with the first event being held in Rome in 2000.

Since then WorldPride has taken place in Jerusalem (2006), London (2012), Toronto (2014), Madrid (2017), New York (2019), Copenhagen-Malmö (2021) and upcoming editions are planned in Washington (2025) and Amsterdam (2026).

Sydney has celebrated the LGTBI Mardi Gras parade since 1978, when an LGTBI march between the iconic Oxford Street and Hyde Park was violently repressed by the police.

This year is the 45th anniversary of the Mardi Gras parade in Sydney and also marks 5 years since the legalization of same-sex marriage in Australia. EFE
