Iranian actress of Oscar-winning movie arrested amid anti-govt protests
Madrid, Dec 17 (EFE).- Iran has arrested actress Taraneh Alidoosti, best known for her role in the Oscar-winning 2016 film “The Salesman,” on charges of inciting anti-government riots.
Alidoosti had allegedly voiced support for the three-month-old protest movement that has spread across the republic following the alleged death in custody of Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini, 22, in Tehran on Sep.16.
Local media reported that the 38-year-old actress was detained Saturday for “publishing false and distorted content, inciting riots, and supporting anti-Iran movements.”
The actress has won several awards in her film career.
She played the lead female in the film “The Salesman,” directed by Asghar Farhadi.
The film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2017.
Iran has been shaken for months by the protests after the death of Amini.
Amini was detained by the morality police on Sep.13 allegedly for improperly donning her hijab.
The unrest has evolved into demands calling for the end of the Islamic republic founded by Ayatollah Khomeini in 1979.
Hundreds of people have reportedly died in the almost three months of protests.
The security forces have arrested at least 2,000 people for inciting and participating in demonstrations.
The brutal police crackdown against protesters has provoked international condemnation and sanctions from Western countries. EFE
