Italy pledges €2 billion in aid to flood-hit northern region

Rome, May 23 (EFE).- The Italian government will provide 2 billion euros to help the northern Emilia-Romagna region recover from deadly floods sparked by heavy rainfall, prime minister Giorgia Meloni said Tuesday.

The floods have caused severe damage across Emilia-Romagna, leaving at least 14 people dead and displacing 36,000. Numerous buildings, roads and bridges have been destroyed by hundreds of landslides.

“A broad package of measures has been passed as an initial response to the flood-hit territories,” Meloni said during a joint press conference with the Emilia-Romagna governor Stefano Bonaccini.

Bonaccini thanked regional and national institutions for their “effort” in dealing with the emergency.

Among the measures approved by the government on Tuesday were extending the state of emergency to other towns in the region and relief packages from each ministry.

Italy’s ministry of foreign affairs approved a total of 300 million euros in aid to the affected export companies, while the ministry of agriculture will offer 100 million euros for agricultural firms.

The health ministry said it would provide hospitals in the area with 8 million euros and the ministry of tourism will compensate its sector with 10 million. EFE
