Certain Memphis Residents Must Boil Water

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — Due to the freezing temperatures, MLGW has asked citizens to conserve water. A precautionary boil water advisory is also active for 15% of MLGW’s customers, specifically those homes and businesses that are located in the southeastern and northwestern areas in Shelby County.
“There are many small and medium sized breaks all across the system. Right now, we have more than 500 tickets, which are reports of broken pipes in homes and businesses. We also have several broken water mains,” said Doug McGowen, MLGW’s President and CEO. “We have a large force of workers who are out in the field helping customers who need their water turned off, and they are also searching for finding and fixing broken mains that we see in the street. The icy streets and the recent freezing rain that we had is not making that any easier; it’s actually challenging our ability to safely respond, but we are responding. I must invoke a precautionary boil water advisory for approximately 15% of MLGW customers. I want to be clear, this is not for our entire system. It’s not for any systems outside of MLGW like Collierville, Bartlett, Germantown, or Millington. It is in defined areas southeastern and northwestern Shelby County.”
It is recommended that water is boiled for at least 1 minute before consumption, like drinking, making ice, cooking, washing dishes, or brushing teeth.
People with severely compromised immune systems, infants, and some elderly may be at increased risk. These people should seek advice from their health care providers about drinking water.
For customers with known or suspected lead water service lines, please allow water to run for 30 seconds before collecting water to boil or use a certified filter.
