MEMPHIS, TN (The Daily Memphian) — About five years ago, the late Tommy Peters hired Julien Salley from Hard Rock Café to get Lafayette’s Music Room in line.

“He told me that everyone was on the chopping block, to do what I needed, so I started in the kitchen because that’s where problems usually start,” Salley said.

“But at Lafayette’s, it was just the opposite. Jody (Moyt) was doing everything right, and the problems were in the front of the house. We worked together to get it turned around. He was the only member of the original staff to still be there.”

Jody Moyt, 42, died Sunday, April 24, after being stabbed in what co-worker Julien Salley called a “road rage” incident on Sam Cooper Boulevard. Jonathan Brush, 57, has been charged with second-degree murder in Moyt’s death. It’s unclear if Moyt and Brush knew each other, but both worked for years in the Memphis restaurant business.

Though it’s unknown if the two men knew each other, they both worked for years in the restaurant business. Brush was most recently employed as a server at The Second Line.

Moyt was a native Memphian and a self-taught chef who worked his way through such long-closed restaurants as Yia Yia’s and LuLu Grill before going to Owen Brennan’s, then to Lafayette’s when it opened in 2014. He was, Bishop chef Justin Kruckman said, “the best boss ever.”

The two worked together off and on for about 10 years, at Owen Brennan’s and at Lafayette’s.

They shared a passion for motorcycles and often rode together, but Moyt’s hobbies were few. He was devoted to his 4-year-old daughter.

On Sunday, Moyt and Salley worked a long day.

Shortly after that, there was an incident at Sam Cooper Boulevard and Hollywood Street. According to the police report, Brush called 911 at 10:45 p.m. and said that he’d been run off the road by someone in a Toyota Camry who then got out of his car and threatened him, and “Brush admitted stabbing the victim.”

Moyt was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Brush was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. He was arraigned on Tuesday in front of General Sessions Criminal Court Judge Bill Anderson and is being held on a $1 million bond.
