Taliban keeping 5 women’s rights activists under detention in Kabul

Geneva, Nov 4 (EFE).- The Afghan security forces have been holding five members of a local women’s rights organization in Kabul, according to the spokesperson of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Jeremy Laurence.

Taliban officials on Thursday arrested activist Zarifa Yaqobi and four men from the Movement of Change for Afghanistan in the middle of a press conference.

According to Laurence, other women attending the press conference were detained for an hour during which their mobile phones were examined and body searches carried out.

The UN has been in contact with the Afghan authorities since it became aware of the incident and has urged the Taliban to respect the right to assemble peacefully, and freedom of expression and opinion, he said.

The Taliban, on the other hand, have claimed they are investigating these reports. EFE
