Japanese Grand Prix canceled again due to Covid, F1 says

Madrid Desk, Aug 18 (EFE).- The Japanese Grand Prix has been cancelled for a second year in a row due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Formula One announced Wednesday.

The race at the Suzuka circuit was due to be held in mid-October, the last of a triple-header following the Russian and Turkish Grand Prix.

“Following ongoing discussions with the promoter and authorities in Japan the decision has been taken by the Japanese government to cancel the race this season due to ongoing complexities of the pandemic in the country,” F1 said.

“Formula 1 is now working on the details of the revised calendar and will announce the final details in the coming weeks.”

Japanese authorities on Tuesday extended a Covid-19 state of emergency, which was slated to expire on 31 August, to 12 September amid a case surge.

The recent 2020 Tokyo Olympics were held under tight restrictions with no crowds permitted in the stadia, as will be the case for the upcoming Paralympic Games, which get underway on 24 August. EFE
