Ukraine says situation ‘complicated’ in Kharkiv

Kyiv, Jun 19 (EFE).- The situation in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv is “quite complicated” following several Russian artillery attacks that killed at least one person, Ukrainian officials said Sunday.

Vadym Denysenko, an aide to the Ukrainian interior minister, told Ukrinform news agency that Russian troops were trying to take back control in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city and adjacent to the Russian border.

After their withdrawal in May, Russian troops are striving to seize Kharkiv again and are using artillery fire to increase their chances of besieging the city, Denysenko said.

Although the situation is complicated, Denysenko stressed that it is “under control” and that the Russians have not yet been able to make progress in key areas, such as the eastern city of Severodonetsk.

A 73-year-old man was killed and five others injured in Russian attacks in the southern Izyum district during the past 24 hours, head of Kharkiv regional military administration Oleh Synyehubov, wrote on Telegram.

Russian forces have also targeted infrastructure, including that of industrial zones in the Kharkiv suburbs and a refinery in Izyum, Synyehubov said.

The “occupation forces continue to terrorize the city’s civilian population with constant artillery shelling,” he added.EFE
