Machete-Wielding Man Causes Standoff at Hacks Cross Restaurant

SHELBY COUNTY, TN (WREG) — Deputies with guns drawn detained a man who terrorized people with a machete and a knife at two fast food restaurants Monday evening in southeast Shelby County.
It happened just after 6 p.m. on Hacks Cross Road and Centennial Drive, where the man cornered people at a Zaxby’s, officers said. The attack continued at a McDonald’s next door.
A manager from Zaxby’s held the man at gunpoint.
Video from the scene showed the man walking toward deputies with the machete in a parking lot as they ordered him to drop the weapon. Deputies said twice they sprayed chemical agent in the man’s eyes, but he did not back down.
SCSO said deputies and an MPD Crisis Intervention officer detained the armed suspect. A video from the sheriff’s office shows deputies and Memphis police on the scene. Deputies eventually used a Tazer to detain the man as he swung the machete, according to a report.
Tevin D. Garrett, 30, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, and vandalism. Jail records show Garrett also faced an earlier charge of violating the Sex Offender Registry Act related to a 2013 rape conviction in Indiana.
Deputies said Garrett repeatedly told them to shoot him during the standoff.
No injuries were reported in Monday’s incident. The sheriff’s office said they are continuing to investigate.
Court records show Garrett pleaded guilty in a similar incident in 2021 that took place at The Half Shell Restaurant on Winchester Road. In that incident, Garrett allegedly was involved in a fight outside the restaurant while holding two steak knives.
The Zaxby’s manager, Kendall Hamilton, also was arrested in the incident and charged with being a felon in possession of a stolen weapon.
