Judge ends Britney Spears’ conservatorship after 13 years

Los Angeles, Nov 12 (EFE).- A judge put an end Friday to the conservatorship of singer Britney Spears after 13 years in which the singer’s estimated $60 million fortune and even aspects of her personal life were subject to decisions made by her father.

“Good God I love my fans so much it’s crazy !!! I think I’m gonna cry the rest of the day !!!! Best day ever ? praise the Lord ? can I get an Amen ????” Spears, 39, wrote on Instagram after the hearing, which she did not attend.

She posted those comments along with a video clip of hundreds of her fans celebrating outside the courthouse when they learned of the ruling by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny.

“As of today, effective immediately, the conservatorship has been terminated as to both the person and the estate,” the singer’s attorney, Mathew Rosengart said. “This is a monumental day for Britney Spears.”

During the hearing, he told Penny that a “safety net” was in place to ensure Britney’s personal and financial well-being.

The conservatorship was set up in 2008, after Jamie Spears, now 69, asked a court to give him control over Britney’s life and finances, claiming that mental health struggles and substance abuse had left her unable to manage her own affairs.

Friday’s ruling was the culmination of a process that began five months ago with the singer’s public denunciation of Jamie Spears’ conduct of the conservatorship as “abusive.”

“I am traumatized,” she told a court hearing in June, accusing Jamie Spears and his associates of enriching themselves at her expensed and demanding a criminal investigation.

In September, the judge removed Jamie Spears as conservator in the wake of a story in The New York Times citing three former employees of the singer as saying that Jamie had microphones placed in Britney’s home and spied on her communications. EFE asl/dr
