Modric, Benzema return to Bernabeu as stadium ends 560-day hiatus

Madrid, Sep 10 (EFE).- The Santiago Bernabeu stadium will host a football game on Sunday for the first time since 1 March 2020, returning the Real Madrid home stadium to its former pre-pandemic glory as Celta Vigo come to the capital for the fourth matchday of the LaLiga season.

Football will be back at the Bernabeu after 560 days, after the stadium was closed throughout the Covid-19 pandemic due to renovation works.

On Monday, Real installed a new surface in preparation for the long-awaited return home against Celta.

After football competitions were interrupted due to the health crisis and the first lockdowns in 2020, Real Madrid decided to use its Alfredo di Stefano training field as its home ground, to hasten the renovation of its normal home.

Works at the Santiago Bernabeu will continue despite the return to action, with an expected end-of-2022 finish date.

On Saturday, the stadium will welcome some 48,000 supporters, about 60% of its pre-renovation capacity of 81,044 spectators. EFE
