Typhoon Mindulle brings torrential rains, high winds to east Japan

Tokyo, Oct 1 (EFE).- Typhoon Mindulle brought torrential rains and strong gusts of wind as it passed along the east coast of Japan on Friday, causing power outages in thousands of homes and grounding over 100 flights.

The 16th typhoon of the season in the Pacific, described as “very strong” by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), approached the east of the Japanese archipelago on Friday and were particularly strong on the Japanese islands of Izu, south of Tokyo, and the coastal prefecture of Chiba, east of the capital.

The typhoon is expected to leave up to 120 millimeters of rainfall in Izu and the Kanto region, which is home to Tokyo, as well as wind gusts in excess of 100 kilometers per hour.

The extreme conditions have damaged power lines in some areas and left some 1,600 homes without electricity in Izu, another 6,200 in Chiba and more than a thousand in the neighboring region of Ibaraki, according to data compiled by state broadcaster NHK.

More than 120 domestic flights scheduled to take off or land from Tokyo’s Haneda airport have been cancelled, and rail services connecting the capital with Chiba and Ibaraki have been disrupted, with numerous delays and train suspensions.

The JMA has warned of the risk of landslides, rivers bursting their banks and high seas, with waves reaching 11 meters on some parts of the Japanese coast.

Japanese authorities said that so far no significant material damage or casualties had been reported, although they have called on the population to remain alert because the typhoon will continue to move along the east coast in a northeasterly direction on Saturday. EFE
