Carlos Alcaraz greeted with new street mural in his Spanish hometown

Murcia, Spain, Jun 6 (EFE).- French open quarterfinalist Carlos Alcaraz has been honored in his local village with a street mural, which the 19-year-old inaugurated Monday following his return from Roland Garros.

Alcaraz, who has burst onto the tennis scene, returned to his hometown of El Palmar to spend some time with his family before he travels to London to take part in the Queen’s Club Championship and Wimbledon.

“I want to keep bringing trophies back to the village, to the region of Murcia (in southeast Spain), and thanks very much to all of you,” Alcaraz told a crowd gathered in front of the new street art painted on the side of an El Palmar building.

The young talent used his speech to pay tribute to his fellow countryman Rafael Nadal, who on Sunday won his 14th French Open title and whose first trophy at Roland Garros came in 2005, when Alzaraz was just two.

“I’ve always said that Rafa has a thousand lives, and I think we’ll have him around for a while yet,” he said.

Alcaraz made it as far as the quarter-finals at Roland Garros, when he was knocked out by Alexander Zverev.

Earlier in the year, Alcaraz beat Zverev to lift the Madrid Open title.EFE
