Bulgaria goes to polls for fourth time in less than two years

Sofia, Oct 2 (EFE).- Bulgarians on Sunday headed to the polls to elect a new parliament in the fourth election in 18 months, amid fears of low turnout

Some 6.6 million citizens are eligible to cast their votes in over 11,000 polling until 8.00 pm.

Voters are choosing between 23 parties and six alliances to for the new 240-seat parliament.

Opinion polls predict that between four and eight parties could exceed the 4% hurdle for entry into parliament, but none of them is expected to secure a majority to govern alone.

Bulgaria’s center-right GERB party of former three-time prime minister Boyko Borisov would likely be the biggest vote-getter, with around 25% of the votes.

Reformist We Continue the Change party of ex-premier Kiril Petkov would come in second with 16% of the votes, according to the latest opinion polls.

Other parties would garner up to 12% of the votes, making the process of forming a ruling coalition difficult due to the current political tension.EFE
