Rashford, Greenwood mount comeback win for Manchester United over Brighton

Sports Desk, Apr 4 (efe-epa).- Tallies by Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood pulled Manchester United’s fat out of the fire, giving the squad a 2-1 comeback win over Brighton on Sunday and cementing them in the No. 2 spot on the Premier League table before they go up against Granada in the first of a two-match Europa League series.

Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s team recovered from an early shock at Old Trafford when the visitors went ahead in the 13th minute with Pascal Gross passing from the right to Danny Welbeck, who tried headers twice – the first point-blank shot blocked by goaltender Dean Henderson, who once again started for David de Gea, but with Welbeck heading the rebound right into the net to send Brighton up 0-1.

Although Brighton dominated the hosts for the rest of the first half, Man United – taking a bit of time to get back on track – didn’t lose heart, resisting the drives of Graham Potter’s squad for an hour before Bruno Fernandes changed the calculus by assisting Rashford, who knocked in a nice goal in the 62nd minute to get the team back to even-steven.

Rashford had tried another shot that would have beat Brighton netminder Robert Sanchez except for the fact that it hit the post.

Brighton went all-out for the win, but it was the Manchester squad who found the twine again next in the 83rd minute, with Paul Pogba sending a centering pass to Greenwood, who on a diving header put the home team ahead for the duration.

Before the match, Solskjaer had made public that Anthony Martial might be out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.

With the win, the Reds got the drop on several teams challenging them for the No. 2 spot – Leicester, Chelsea and Tottenham, none of whom managed to win in the 31st week of Premier League action.

Nevertheless, it seems almost a foregone conclusion that Manchester City will take the Premier League title this year, 14 points ahead of its crosstown rivals.

Solksjaer started with Dean Henderson; Aaron Wan Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw; Paul Pogba, Fred; Mason Greenwood, Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Edinson Cavani. Later, he sent in Daniel James for Rashford, Donny Ven de Beek for Cavani and Scott McTominay for Pogba.
