Hollywood’s largest union authorizes strike in labor negotiations

Washington DC, Jun 5 (EFE).- SAG-AFTRA, Hollywood’s largest union of film, radio and television actors and presenters, decided on Monday to go on strike if it does not get a new agreement with the studios before June 30, according to a statement by the group.

“In a powerful show of solidarity, SAG-AFTRA members have voted 97.91% in favor of a strike authorization ahead of negotiations of the TV/Theatrical Contracts,” SAG-AFTRA said, ahead of the talks with studios, expected to commence on Wednesday.

These demands are similar to those of the Writers Guild of America (WGA), which has been on strike for almost six weeks now after failing to reach an agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers for a new collective agreement.

The actors, many of whom have shown their support for the WGA against the big studios, also call for an improvement in wages and working conditions, which they claim have not been adjusted sufficiently to inflation and the disruptions related to “streaming.”

Moreover, there are concerns about the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and the management of voice and image rights.

The last time Hollywood actors went on strike was in 2000.

The WGA strike is already making its effects felt on the industry, and the production of series such as “Stranger Things”, “Cobra Kai” and “The Last of Us” have been suspended.

The situation could further complicate the development of new productions in Hollywood. EFE
