Russia could stage chemical weapon ‘false flag’ operation, Nato warns

Brussels, Mar 15 (EFE).- Russia could be planning to stage a so-called “false flag” operation using chemical weapons, Nato chief Jens Stoltenberg warned Tuesday.

The remarks from the secretary-general come after Russia claimed the United States was funding “military biological activities” in Ukraine, without producing any evidence of this. Washington and Kyiv flatly denied the allegations as Kremlin propaganda.

“For months, we have exposed Russia’s long list of lies,” Stoltenberg told a press conference ahead of a Nato defense meeting on Tuesday.

“Now they are making absurd claims about biological labs and chemical weapons in Ukraine. This is just another lie. And we are concerned that Moscow could stage a false flag operation, possibly including chemical weapons.”

Responding to questions during the conference, Stoltenberg underlined how Moscow had already used chemical weapons to target political dissidents and facilitated their use in Syria during its intervention on behalf of Syrian president Bashar Al Assad.

He added that Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine could prompt Nato to boost its land, sea and air forces along its eastern flank, with more troops and prepositioned equipment.

“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its military integration of Belarus creates a new security reality on the European continent, so we need to reset Nato’s military posture to meet this new reality.” EFE
