Russia tells US ‘threats’ must stop to save deteriorating diplomatic ties

Moscow, Mar 22 (EFE).- The United States must stop issuing threats against Russia if Washington wants to maintain bilateral diplomatic relations, Russian officials warned on Tuesday.

The US ambassador to Russia John Sullivan was summoned on Monday to a meeting where Moscow delivered a formal letter of complaint over Washington’s sanctions against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine and the “unacceptable” comments by president Joe Biden, in which he accused his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin of being a “murderous dictator” and war criminal.

“The Americans simply need to stop their escalation, both verbally and from the point of view of stuffing the Kyiv regime with weaponry,” Russian deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov told journalists, according to the Interfax agency.

“They need to stop producing threats to Russia,” he added.

The US and Russia have maintained uninterrupted diplomatic relations since 1933.

Ryabkov said that Moscow blamed the US for the “downward tendency” in bilateral relations, but said the deterioration would not impact Russia’s “determination to move towards accomplishing the goals of the special military operation (in Ukraine).”

Moscow warned that Biden’s statements, “unworthy of such a high-ranking statesman, brought US-Russian relations to the brink of rupture.” EFE
