Typhoon Hinnamnor kills 7 in flooded South Korea parking lot

Seoul, Sep 7 (EFE).- Rescue teams Wednesday reported the discovery of the bodies of seven people who drowned in an underground car park in the South Korean city of Pohang that flooded during the passage of typhoon Hinnamnor.

Two survivors were found in good health, a 39-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman, who were rescued after spending more than 12 hours trapped, according to South Korean news agency Yonhap.

These nine people had gone down during the early hours of Tuesday to move their cars from the parking lot of their residential complex because it was flooding due to heavy rains caused by the typhoon.

The rescue teams were continuing to drain the parking lot, although they said they do not expect to find more people who could have been trapped.

In Pohang, a coastal city about 270 kilometers southeast of Seoul, the body of a 66-year-old woman was also found Tuesday in an underground parking facility.

Ten people have died and two have gone missing due to Hinnamnor, the strongest typhoon on record to hit South Korea, as it passed through the country’ southeast.

Hinnamnor, which on top of torrential rain caused winds of 140 kmph, has left images of supermarkets, streets or parking lots completely flooded in Pohang, and other major damage in cities such as Busan, the country’s second-largest city.

This again underscores the infrastructure challenges facing the country at a time when extreme weather events have hit the Korean peninsula with increasing frequency due to the climate crisis.

In August, a historic volume of rainfall inundated neighborhoods in central Seoul, leaving 16 dead, three of them members of the same family who drowned in a semi-basement apartment. EFE
