Over 20% increase in global Covid-19 deaths in past week

Geneva, Jul 28 (EFE).- Global deaths related to Covid-19 increased by 21% in the past week compared to the previous seven days, the World Health Organization reported on Wednesday.

Deaths spiked across the world, especially in the Americas (by 29%) and Southeast Asia (by 30%), while Europe’s mortality rates remain similar to the previous week.

Infections reported during the week increased by 8%, driven by a surge in the Americas (30%) and the Western Pacific (25%).

The countries that reported the highest number of infections last week are the United States, Brazil, Indonesia, the United Kingdom and India.

Nearly 70,000 deaths and 3.8 million infections registered throughout the week bring the total tally to 4,170,155 deaths and 194.6 million cases.

Close to 3.7 billion doses of the Covid-19 vaccine have been administered globally, according to the WHO.

The Delta variant has been detected in another eight countries over the past seven days, which means it has presence in some 132 countries. EFE
