Luis Enrique leaves role as Spain coach after World Cup disappointment

Doha, Dec 8 (EFE).- Luis Enrique has left his role as Spain’s national team head coach, the Spanish football federation confirmed Thursday, after his contract expired at the end of the team’s run at the World Cup in Qatar.

Spain were stunned by Morocco as they crashed out on penalties in the Round of 16.

“The RFEF wants to thank the work of Luis Enrique and his entire coaching staff at the helm of the senior national team over the past few years,” the RFEF said in a statement, adding that the federation had decided to “start a new project” that it hopes can continue “the growth achieved in recent years”.

Luis Enrique was informed of the decision on Thursday morning, after the squad returned from Doha.

Spain Under-21 coach Luis de la Fuente is among the favorites to take over. EFE
