New York judge rejects Trump’s request to pause 454 million fine

New York, Feb 28 (EFE). – A New York appellate judge refused on Wednesday to suspend during the appeal process the 454 million fine, including interest, against former US President Donald Trump (2017-2021).

The former president had offered to pay a $100 million bail while the appeals court reviews the case, but Judge Anil Singh ruled that Trump must post the full amount to stop enforcement of the sentence.

However, Judge Singh did put on hold Trump’s ban on borrowing from New York entities for three years, which the defense had cited as one of the reasons the former president could not pay the $450 million at once.

Although it is unknown how much cash Trump has, US media has speculated that the former president may have to sell some of his properties to pay the fine.

On Feb.16, New York Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron ordered Trump to pay more than $350 million for fraud schemes at the Trump Organization and barred him from borrowing from New York banks or serving as a director of any corporation or legal entity in the state for three years.

Trump appealed the decision on Monday. A judge panel is expected to make a final decision on the case by mid-March.

New York Attorney General Letitia James, who pushed the civil case against Trump for inflating the value of his assets to get favorable deals with banks and insurance companies, has threatened to seize his assets if the former president doesn’t pay. EFE
