Spain reach first ever World Cup final after late winner against Sweden

Sports Desk, Aug 15 (EFE).- Spain defeated Sweden on Tuesday after a dramatic conclusion to their semi final in Auckland.

After 80 minutes of nervy, error-strewn play from both sets of players, substitute Salma Paralluelo – who scored the winner against the Netherlands in the quarters – broke the game open when she swept in a right-footed finish.

Sweden soon hit back after two of their own substitutes combined in the Spain box, Rebecka Blomqvist expertly volleying in Lina Hurtig’s nod down in the 88th minute.

With the game heading for extra time, Spain raced up the other end of the pitch and restored their lead after Olga Carmona fired in from the edge of the box, her shot bouncing in off the bar.

At the final whistle, Spain’s players shed tears of joy after reaching their first ever World Cup final, having never previously won a knockout match.

Sweden, who have now lost four World Cup semi finals in a row, were left to rue another missed opportunity.

Spain will face European champions England or co-hosts Australia in Saturday’s final. EFE
