Hurdles world record snapped twice, long-jump powerhouse retires with silver

Tokyo, 3 Aug (EFE).- Norwegian athlete Karsten Warholm claimed gold by beating his own world record in the men’s 400-meter hurdles with a time of 45.94 seconds, while Team USA’s silver medallist Ray Benjamin also beat Warholm’s previous world record but finished 0.23 seconds short of the new ceiling set by the Norwegian.

Germany’s Malaika Mihambo won the gold medal in the women’s long jump, overcoming Team USA’s Brittney Reese, one of the most-medalled long-jumpers in history who concluded her fourth and final Olympics with a second place on the podium.

Anita Wlodarczyk from Poland came in first place in the women’s hammer throw final, becoming the first woman to collect three consecutive Olympic gold medals in the same discipline after topping the podium in London 2012 and Rio 2016.

Elaine Thompson-Herah doubled down on her 100m gold by snatching the 200m title for Jamaica as well, successfully defending both golds she had claimed before in Rio 2016.

Hosts Japan were denied a place in the men’s football final after Spain took the spot with a goal in the final minutes of the extra time, earning the Europeans a face-off against Brazil, which defeated Mexico in a penalty shootout to move on to the final. EFE
