Navalny claims Russian authorities have opened new criminal case

Moscow, Oct 20 (EFE).- Jailed Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny claimed on Thursday that authorities had opened a new criminal case against him for promoting terrorism and extremism and “rehabilitating Nazism”.

“I am a genius of the underworld. Professor Moriarty is no match for me. You all thought I had been isolated in prison for two years, but it turns out I was actively committing crimes,” Navalny posted on Twitter.

The opposition leader said the new charges against him would add up to another 30 years in jail.

“Isn’t it awesome? Rarely has a criminal done as much on the outside as I have done while behind bars,” he said.

According to the criminal case, the opposition leader allegedly promoted terrorism when his deputy, Leonid Volkov, defended the 1944 assassination attempt of Adolf Hitler by military officer Claus von Stauffenberg.

“As I understood from the ruling, my fault in promoting Nazism lies in the fact that Volkov said on the air of Popular Politics: “Colonel Stauffenberg was right to try to kill Hitler, he must have been killed.

“From the point of view of the Investigative Committee and Putin, Hitler was the legitimate authority, and blowing him up was an act of extremism,” Navalny tweeted.

Navalny has condemned president Vladimir Putin’s “criminal war” on Ukraine and accused the Kremlin of sending hundreds of thousands of Russians “to the slaughter”.

On Tuesday, a Russian court rejected Navalny’s second appeal of a nine-year sentence.

The opposition leader is serving a sentence on charges of fraud and contempt of court. EFE
