Palestinian shot dead after attacking Israeli soldier with hammer

Jerusalem, Sep 8 (EFE).- A Palestinian was shot dead early Thursday after reportedly attacking an Israeli soldier with a hammer in the central West Bank village of Beitin, said the military.

The unidentified victim was the third Palestinian slain by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank in as many days.

According to the Israeli military, forces were conducting a routine operation near Beitin when the suspect struck a soldier in the face with a hammer.

The soldier opened fire and killed the Palestinian man. Troops recovered a knife from the deceased.

The Palestinian health ministry confirmed the killing but did not identify the slain Palestinian.

The incident occurred as hostilities in the occupied region have escalated.

Almost every day, Israeli forces kill Palestinians in the West Bank.

The latest killing brought to seven the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces in eight days.

Three Palestinians have been shot dead in the last three days.

In recent weeks, Palestinian attacks against Israeli soldiers and settlers have intensified.

Israeli security sources have stressed the need to reinforce security in the area.

In early April, the Israeli army launched the operation “Break the Wave” in the occupied West Bank in response to five attacks perpetrated by Palestinians on Israeli territory, in which 18 people were killed.

Since then, more than 90 Palestinians have been killed and 1,500 others arrested amid operations that have mainly taken place in Nablus and Jenin, per the Palestinian figures.

Among the Palestinians killed were armed militiamen who responded violently to Israeli raids in the West Bank.

But there were also unarmed civilians, minors, and journalists, such as Al Jazeera reporter Shireen Abu Akleh.

Israel occupied the remaining Palestinian territories of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza Strip in the Six-Day war in 1967, in one of the longest occupations in present-day history. EFE
