Sixteen killed in Russia plane crash carrying parachute jumpers
Moscow, Oct 10 (EFE).- Sixteen people on Sunday were killed and six injured in a plane crash in the Russian region of Tatarstan, local authorities reported.
The L-410 light aircraft was carrying 21 parachute jumpers and two crew members.
“At 9.23 (6.23 GMT) we received information about the crash of a light aircraft near the town of Menzelinsk,” a representative of the Emergencies Ministry told local news agency Interfax.
Fire and rescue units, which immediately rushed to the crash site, managed to contain the flames and extract seven survivors from the aircraft.
Authorities said the most likely cause of the accident was due to a technical failure.
The plane, which belonged to a local air club, crashed shortly after taking off just over a kilometer from the airfield, according to emergency services.
The L-410 is a Czech-made twin-engine aircraft that can carry up to 19 passengers or 1.8 tons of cargo over distances of up to 1,500 kilometers.
One of its main features is that it can be employed at airfields with short and dirt runways. EFE
