Mercedes waives Verstappen Formula One win appeal

Berlin, Dec 16 (EFE).- The Mercedes team dropped Thursday its appeal against the result of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the last of the Formula One World Championship, which gave the victory and title to Red Bull Racing’s Dutchman Max Verstappen.

“Together with Lewis (Hamilton) we have carefully considered how we should react to the result of that final (…),” Mercedes said in a statement, adding that they finally renounced the appeal “for the love of this sport” and given the certainty that “the sporting result” should prevail.

Mercedes said they raised the appeal for the application of a new regulation on safety cars that, in their opinion, hindered Hamilton, who had led throughout the race.

They chose to protest against that result “for the sake of fair play” and to obtain “clarity,” via a “constructive dialogue” with the governing body ??and Formula One.

The dropped appeal gives Verstappen, 24, his first Formula One championship title. He dethroned Hamilton from what would have been his eighth title, which would have set a new absolute record. He currently shares the honor with Germany’s Michael Schumacher, with seven.

Mercedes had said Sunday it would appeal against the stewards’ decision to deny its two protests at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

It then said the safety car exit did not comply with the Sports Regulations, but stewards dismissed the protests after a few hours.

Mercedes had until Thursday to file a new appeal against that decision. EFE
