Israel registers record number of Covid-19 cases

Jerusalem, Sep 2 (EFE).- Israel on Thursday announced more than 11,000 new coronavirus infections within the past 24 hours, a new daily record high since the pandemic began, despite the country’s world-leading vaccine drive.

Some 11,187 infections were recorded in the past day, pushing the current active coronavirus cases to over 90,000, of which 666 people were hospitalized with a serious condition.

Hospitalizations for Covid-19 began to decline this week, after having increased steadily throughout the past month and a half.

On Wednesday, 2.5 million Israeli school students returned to school.

The number of people vaccinated with a third dose of the Pfizer vaccine has increased, as the country attempts to curb an ongoing fourth wave of the virus.

So far, over 2.3 million people have had Covid-19 vaccine booster shots, the majority of whom are over 50 years of age.

Israel on Sunday expanded its booster vaccination campaign to everyone over the age of 12.

Since the breakout of the pandemic, Israel has recorded over a million coronavirus cases and more than 7,000 linked deaths. EFE
