MEMPHIS, TN (The Daily Memphian) — San Marcos Bakery, a pan-dulce and sweet-bread bakery, is opening in East Memphis as soon as this February.

The 1,200-square-foot bakery will be located at 4600 Quince Road in the Colonial Plaza Shopping Center.

Owner Cesario Mejia said he chose this shopping center because of the heavy traffic.

The bakery will serve bread and sweets commonly found in Mexico and Guatemala, such as conchas, cubiletes, mantecadas, galletas and French bread.

Mejia said he previously worked at a bakery in his native Guatemala.

“It has always been a dream,” Mejia said. “I know how to make the bread, and I’m ready to open my own business.”

After Mejia lost his job in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he set his eyes on opening up a bakery in Memphis.

Mejia said although getting this business started in Memphis was hard work, it was worth it.

“The paperwork is very complicated here in Memphis, but I encourage many people who want to start a business to do so,” Mejia said.

Mejia said he is most excited to see his customers happy and smiling after eating from his bakery.

“I’m excited for my customers, the people, to look happy and smiling,” Mejia said. “I’m excited to open my business here.”

Mejia said he is waiting for the last couple of permits to be finalized, then he will open shortly after. Mejia said he predicts it will be in February.

The bakery will only be open for takeout Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
