Alcaraz, Nadal to miss Monte-Carlo Masters

Madrid, Apr 4 (EFE).- Spanish tennis stars Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal on Tuesday both announced they would miss the upcoming Monte-Carlo Masters.

Alcaraz, who this year has won the Indian Wells Masters, picked up an injury during his semifinal match in Miami on Saturday.

“After two months abroad, I am happy to return home but sad because I finished my last match in Miami with physical discomfort,” he said in a tweet.

“After visiting my doctor in Murcia today and being evaluated, I will not be able to go to Monte Carlo to start the clay court tour.

“I have post-traumatic arthritis in my left hand and muscular discomfort in the spine that needs rest to prepare for everything that is to come.”

Nadal confirmed his absence from the Monte-Carlo Masters just minutes earlier.

“Hi everyone, I’m still not ready to compete at the highest level. I will not be able to play in one of the most important tournaments of my career, Monte Carlo,” the 22-time Grand Slam winner, who has been struggling with a foot injury, said on social media.

“I continue my preparation process, hoping to return soon,” Nadal, 36, added.

With his defeat in Miami, Alcaraz, 19, winner of last year’s US Open, slipped to second place in the ATP rankings behind Novak Djokovic.EFE
