Ukrainian fighters keep resisting at Mariupol’s Azovstal steelworks

Kyiv, May 12 (EFE).- Ukrainian soldiers trapped inside the Azovstal steel plant in the southeastern port of Mariupol on Thursday continued to fight against the Russian troops, who have blocked all exits of the mill’s underground passages in recent hours.

Petro Andriushchenko, the mayor of Mariupol, said in a Telegram post that the group of soldiers from Ukraine’s Azov unit were launching counterattack attempts from inside Azovstal, the last pocket of resistance in the embattled Mariupol.

“Yesterday the enemy did not stop their ground assault attempts,” Andriushchenko said.

“The key objective is to block the exits from underground passages, which have been shown to the enemy by a traitor.”

Russian forces continued bombardment of the factory on Thursday, following last week’s evacuation of women, children and elderly people who were taking refuge in the facility.

Mariupol has been experiencing a serious humanitarian catastrophe since the Russians besieged it in the wake of their invasion of Ukraine in late February.EFE
