Dardenne brothers return to Cannes with drama on migration
Cannes, France, May 25 (EFE).- Belgian filmmaking duo, the Dardenne brothers, returned on Wednesday to the Cannes Film Festival to compete for the Palme d’Or award with their latest movie Tori and Lokita.
The two-time Palme d’Or winners, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, have remained loyal to their style of denouncing injustice with their latest creation that sheds light on the cruelty of the European immigration reception system.
The movie tells the story of Tori and Lokita, two young immigrants from Benin and Cameroon who have arrived in Belgium and are passing themselves as brother and sister.
“We wanted to tell the story of a17-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy who, in a hostile situation, build a friendship that becomes their country and form of resistance to what surrounds them,” Luc said at a press conference.
“At the same time, it denounces the living conditions of these minors who have been exiled and are vulnerable and alone,” he added.
The young actors, Joely Mbundu and Pablo Schils, who play the title roles, are non-professional actors.
The Dardenne brothers said that even though the actors did not know each other from before, their relationship came naturally and was credible on screen.
The directors added that the film reflects the reality of how difficult it is for migrants arriving in Europe from countries not at war to apply for legal residency. EFE
