Kyiv declares 35-hour curfew as Russian hostilities kill civilians
Lviv, Ukraine, Mar 15 (EFE).- Kyiv authorities declared a 35-hour curfew on Tuesday as the Ukrainian capital braces for more Russian hostilities amid a visit from foreign officials.
The city’s mayor, former boxer Vitali Klitschko, said the city faced a “difficult and dangerous” situation and clarified in a statement that residents would be allowed to leave their home to take cover in bomb shelters.
An attack on a residential building early Tuesday killed at least two civilians, local emergency services reported, adding that another 35 people were pulled from the wreckage.
The curfew coincides with a visit from the prime ministers of the Czech Republic, Petr Fiela; Slovenia, Janez Jansa, and Poland, Mateusz Morawiecki along with deputy Polish prime minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski.
Elsewhere in Ukraine, Russian shelling on residential areas killed at least seven people in Kharkiv, the second-largest city in Ukraine, which has been the target of heavy artillery fire since the Russian invasion began 20 days ago.
An operation to evacuate civilians from the heavily-shelled city of Sumy, near the Russian border in northeast Ukraine, was also underway Tuesday, Ewan Watson, a spokesman from the International Committee of the Red Cross, said. EFE
