Spain’s PM elected president of Socialist International

Madrid, Nov 25 (EFE).- Spain’s prime minister Pedro Sánchez was elected as the new president of Socialist International Friday.

The Socialist Party (PSOE) leader, 50, took over from former Greek PM George Papandreou during a congress in Madrid, Spain’s capital. He ran unopposed.

“If there is one word that sums up what it is to be a socialist, a social democrat (…) it is to act. To act means to rebel against resignation and give reasons for confidence in the face of the pessimism that the right wing and reactionary movements in national and international politics seek to promote,” Sánchez said.

He will be the first Spaniard to take the role.

Socialist International brings together 132 social democratic, socialist and labor movements from around the world. EFE
