Guatemala attorney general says she won’t stage coup

Guatemala City, Sep 5 (EFE).- Guatemala’s Attorney General Consuelo Porras Argueta said Tuesday she wouldn’t carry out a coup after a meeting with the Organization of American States Secretary General Luis Almagro.

In a statement, Porras Argueta said “that the only truth is what the Secretary General” Almagro was told Tuesday, who is in Guatemala to verify the presidential transition.

“We reject any accusation” of being part of “a coup process,” she added.

The attorney general was accompanied by Angel Pineda, Prosecutor Rafael Curruchiche, all of whom have been sanctioned by the United States in the last three years on charges of undermining Justice in Guatemala.

The prosecutor’s statement comes four days after the president-elect of Guatemala, Bernardo Arevalo de Leon, accused her of attempting a coup to prevent her investiture in January.

Arevalo de Leon won the elections on Aug. 25 despite attempts by the Public Ministry led by Porras to suspend his candidacy and that of his social democratic party, Movimiento Semilla, from July 12 for an alleged case of false signatures in 2018.

Because of this, Almagro arrived Monday in Guatemala to supervise the transition process from current President Alejandro Giammattei to the president-elect, Bernardo Arevalo de Leon.

Porras Argueta said Tuesday that “anyone who needs to know the progress of the complaints should approach” the entity.

One of the lawyers of the Seed Movement, the elected deputy Andrea Zecena, said Monday that they have been denied at least 29 times access to the accusation filed against the political group by the public ministry.

Arevalo de Leon’s swearing in is scheduled for Jan. 14. EFE
