Duterte’s daughter to run for Philippines vice presidency

Bangkok, Nov 13 (EFE).- The eldest daughter of Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte will run for the country’s vice presidency in next year’s national election, Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP) announced Saturday.

“Vice presidential candidate Mayor Sara Duterte Carpio of the Lakas CMD is hereby adopted by the PFP as its candidate for vice president, and hereby indorses her candidacy as the running mate of the PFP’s official candidate for president of the Philippines Senator Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. in the 9 May 2022 elections,” the PFP’s resolution said.

“Bongbong” Marcos is the son of late dictator Ferdinand Marcos.

On Tuesday, Duterte withdrew her candidacy for re-election as mayor of Davao, which she has held since 2016, quit her party Hugpong ng Pagbabago, and on Thursday joined Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas CMD).

After much speculation, on Saturday she replaced Lyle Uy as Lakas-CMD’s candidate for vice president.

The 43-year-old was by all polls the favorite if she had decided to run for head of state to replace her father, whose single six-year term ends in 2022.

In October, the current 76-year-old president announced that he would leave politics once his term ends.

The Philippines entered a long electoral campaign season on Oct. 1 with the opening of candidate registration.

Among the other presidential candidates are current vice president Leni Robredo, boxing legend Manny Pacquiao, President Duterte’s former police chief Ronald dela Rosa and Manila mayor Francisco Domagoso.

The war on drugs, which has caused thousands of deaths in the country, will be the bloodiest legacy left by Rodrigo Duterte, a politician who has been embroiled in numerous controversies but who has maintained high levels of popularity during his mandate. EFE
