Israeli operation focuses on Khan Yunis as 97 killed in past 24 hours in Gaza

Jerusalem, Mar 5 (EFE).- At least 97 people have died in Gaza in the past 24 hours, Gazan health officials said Tuesday, as the Israeli military operation in the Strip continued, mainly focusing on the southern city of Khan Yunis.

Israel said that its combat units continued to operate in the western flank of Khan Yunis, conducting targeted raids on Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants.

“Over the past day, the troops apprehended dozens of Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists who hid among the civilian population and attempted to flee the area,” the military said in a statement.

The Israeli army also reported it was evacuating civilians from the combat zones in western parts of Khan Yunis.

Operations were also carried out in central parts of Gaza, with troops eliminating “20 terrorists” using snipers, tanks, and drones.

“The IAF eliminated over 50 terrorist targets throughout Gaza, including launch posts, weapons storage facilities, and tunnel shafts, with precise strikes,” the military added.

The Hamas-led Gazan Health Ministry said at least 97 Gazans were killed in the Israeli operation during the past 24 hours.

“The Israeli occupation has committed 10 massacres against families in the Gaza Strip, leaving 97 martyred and 123 injured in the last 24 hours,” the ministry said in a statement.

Since the conflict began on Oct. 7, at least 30,631 Gazans have been killed and 72,043 others injured, according to official Hamas data.

Health authorities warned that the actual death toll in Gaza could be higher, with around 8,000 people still missing, believed to be buried under the rubble of buildings destroyed by Israeli bombardments.

During the operation, at least 34 civilians were killed in airstrikes targeting family homes in Khan Yunis and Gaza City in the north, medical sources from Al Shifa Medical Complex and the European Hospital of Gaza told the Palestinian Wafa news agency.

Israeli fighter jets also bombed the family house of Al Kilani in Beit Lahia neighborhood in the north, injuring several people, according to Wafa. EFE
